REVIEW: Society’s Fools #1

Society’s Fools #1 (2023), 14 pages, B&W, https://societysfoolsfanzine.limitedrun.com/products/750701-societys-fools-issue-1

Another new English language oi! zine! This one consists of interviews with Big Dog, The Stress, Klaxon and Claimed Choice. Sticking to the tried and true method of layered cutouts that are then photocopied, the design is so simple but at the same time appealing that I was a bit jealous that I didn’t go with this aesthetic with Issue 1 of The Coldest, rather than the antiseptic Word based design I ended up with.

The difference between a zine and a magazine is that the former is obtainable and relatable. You can imagine meeting the person who created it, talking to them and maybe even making something similar after being inspired by it. Contrast that with a ‘proper’ magazine which has design and contributions that can feel beyond what a normal person could do. Society’s Fools is a good reminder of that difference and I look forward to what comes next.
